Broken Beach Nusa Penida : What to Know Before You Go

Broken Beach Nusa Penida is one of those places that stops you mid-sentence when you first see it. The massive natural arch over the bay, the turquoise water churning through it, the sheer cliff walls dropping straight into the ocean it doesn’t look entirely real. I’ve visited twice now, and the second time hit just as hard as the first.

Locally called Pasih Uug, this geological formation sits on the west coast of Nusa Penida, about 45 minutes from Bali by fast boat. It’s always paired with Angel’s Billabong, a natural tidal pool a two-minute walk away. If you time it right, you can try to catch both spots before the tour buses arrive and this guide shows you exactly how.

Here’s everything you need to know: how to get here from Bali, what it costs, the best time to visit, and what you can do once you’re on the ground.

How to Get to Broken Beach Nusa Penida from Bali

Complete Guide to Broken Beach Nusa Penida

You can’t drive to Nusa Penida from Bali you need a boat. The three main departure ports are Sanur, Kusamba, and Padang Bai. Sanur is the most convenient if you’re coming from Seminyak, Kuta, or Ubud. Fast boats run throughout the morning and take 30 to 45 minutes. Round-trip tickets typically cost $20–$30 USD.

Once you land at Nusa Penida’s harbor, the drive to Broken Beach takes about an hour by car. The roads are legitimately difficult narrow, steep, and poorly maintained in places. You can try renting a scooter if you’re an experienced rider, but I’d strongly recommend booking a full-day driver instead. A driver handles parking, knows the best stops, and can get you to Broken Beach Nusa Penida, Angel’s Billabong, Kelingking Beach, and Crystal Bay all in one day.

BGB TIP: You can pre-arrange a driver through your Bali hotel, or book transportation at the port booth when you arrive in Nusa Penida. Expect to pay $40-$50 USD for a full-day tour that includes pickup, parking, and entrance fees

How to get to Broken Beach from Nusa Penida port?

The roads around Nusa Penida are pretty challenging because they are very narrow. From the Nusa Penida Getting to Broken Beach Nusa Penida from Kelingking Beach

If you’re heading from Kelingking Beach, the drive takes 20 to 30 minutes by car or scooter. Take the central road northwest across the island and watch for signage toward Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong. The road improves slightly in this section compared to other parts of Nusa Penida, but it’s still narrow keep that in mind if you’re self-driving.

The drive time to Broken Beach from your accommodation will depend on which part of the island you’re staying on. You can pre-book while you’re in Bali, your driver to get around Nusa Penida or book through the transportation booth at Nusa Penida port. Car transportation costs $40- $50 USD for an entire day tour. My tour included pick-up from my hotel in Bali, parking and entrance fees, and transportation to Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Kelingking Beach, and Crystal Bay.

When is the best time to visit Broken Beach Nusa Penida?

Broken Beach Nusa Penida

April through September is dry season in Nusa Penida, and that’s when you want to plan this visit. The skies stay clear, the ocean is calmer, and Angel’s Billabong is accessible for swimming.

Timing your arrival within those months makes a real difference. I got to Broken Beach before 10 AM on my first trip. The light was low, the arch cast long shadows across the water, and I had the viewing area nearly to myself. By 10 AM, tour groups start rolling in, and the cliffside fills up fast.

On my second visit, I went after 4 PM instead. Most Nusa Penida day-trippers are back at the port by then, so the crowds thin out considerably. You can try either window; both work well, just for different reasons. Morning gives you the best light for photos; late afternoon gives you the most space.

BGB TIP: It could be challenging visiting during rainy season (October to March). Swells make Angel’s Billabong unsafe for swimming, and overcast skies flatten the water color that makes Broken Beach Nusa Penida worth photographing in the first place.

Broken Beach Entrance Fee and Costs

A combined ticket covering Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong costs IDR 15,000 roughly $1 USD. Pay in cash at the gate in Indonesian Rupiah. There’s no card reader on site.

If you hired a driver or booked a day tour from Bali, confirm whether entrance fees are included. On the tours I’ve taken, they were covered. When I went independently, I paid at the gate either way, it’s a minor amount. Just have small IDR bills on hand.

BGB TIP: It costs IDR 15,000 or $1 USD for a combined entrance to Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong on Nusa Penida. Like most attractions on the island, the fee is cash only.

Parking is IDR 10,000 if you’re self-driving. Your driver handles this automatically if you’re on a tour.

Things to do in Broken Beach

Walk around Broken Beach on Nusa Penida

Broken Beach Nusa Penida

Broken Beach is known for its arch formed over many, many years. There is no access going down the beach since the tides in Nusa Penida are also very unpredictable. But there’s a natural pool at Angel’s Billabong, a few minutes walk from Broken Beach, which you can enjoy if the waves are calm.

There are many spots in Broken Beach you can take photos of, from cliff points to the cove archway. Just be careful getting near the edge because there are no safety rails. If you want to eat or drink while enjoying the view of Broken Beach, there are a few warungs you can choose from before entering Broken Beach.

Swim at the Natural Pool at Angel’s Billabong near Broken Beach

Angel Billabong

From Broken Beach, you can walk through the rocky stairs to the famous Angel Billabong. You won’t miss the path going here since it is just along the coastline of Broken Beach. Almost all tours include a stop at both locations since it’s just near each other.

Before finishing the loop, stroll around the entire natural pool’s perimeter and even over the arch. The complete loop takes about 10 minutes and is appropriate for all fitness levels. While there aren’t many traditional beach activities here, such as swimming or snorkeling, enjoying the beauty is the main attraction. The crystal clear ocean water on high tide creates beautiful natural tidal pools. In some parts, the water is deep enough to enjoy a quick dip, so it is better to be ready and wear your swimwear. When the waves are extra strong during the rainy season, tourists cannot go to Angel Billabong for safety.

Visit the Manta Ray Viewpoint

Most tourists leave after seeing Angel Billabong, so check with your tour provider if they allow you to visit this viewpoint. It’s good that my driver, who lives in Nusa Penida, showed me a cliff where you can see the Manta Rays. It’s a five-minute walk from Angel’s Billabong to Broken Beach. The rocky path was challenging, especially since I was wearing flip-flops. The view is amazing. I see the Giant Manta Rays cruising the blue water of Nusa Penida while sitting on the cliffs.

Final Thoughts on Broken Beach Nusa Penida

Broken Beach Nusa Penida is worth the trip on its own, but the island stacks well; you can combine it with Kelingking Beach, Crystal Bay, and Angel’s Billabong all in one day with a driver. That’s genuinely one of the best day trips you can do from Bali.

Make sure to get there early, and I highly suggest hiring a driver. If you are doing any diving tour and staying on the island, ask specifically about the Manta Ray Viewpoint. You can try to get there on your own, but a local guide makes it far easier. For the rest of your Nusa Penida planning, check out our Kelingking Beach guide and our Crystal Bay guide, both of which are easy to combine into the same long day.
