Crystal Bay Nusa Penida was my last stop on a day trip from Bali, and honestly, I almost skipped it. By the time we got there it was mid-afternoon and I’d already done the big viewpoints. I’m glad I stayed.

I only had a few hours at the beach, but it was enough to snorkel the reef and catch the tail end of sunset before the boat back. If you’re doing a day trip like I was, Crystal Bay is the one place worth saving your energy for at the end. And if you’re actually staying on the island, I’d make sunset here a non-negotiable it’s the best spot on Nusa Penida for it, and you’ll have the luxury of timing it right without rushing back to catch a fast boat.

How to get to Crystal Bay Nusa Penida?

To get to Crystal Bay Nusa Penida from Bali, start from the port of Sanur or Padang Bai and book a ferry or fast boat to Nusa Penida islands. Crystal Bay is located on the west side of the island of Nusa Penida. It’s accessible by car or scooter, about a 30-minute drive from northern Penida’s main docks and accommodation.

Thanks to the road’s recent renovation, finding your way to Crystal Bay is simple. It takes only around 15 minutes on a motorbike from Toyapakeh harbor. Turn right at the first major crossroads, marked by a small temple in the center. And proceed toward Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay as indicated by the signs. The parking area is accessible after a sharp right turn descending a steep slope, and you’ll need to pay less than $1 USD or IDR 5,000 for the parking cost.

Drive around the Palm Trees Road of Crystal Bay

Just before the parking area at Crystal Bay, there’s a left turn that takes you down a road lined with tall palm trees. It’s a short detour but worth it if you catch it empty the composition for photos is genuinely good. It gets busy mid-morning, so either go early or on a quieter weekday.

Watch the sunset at Crystal Beach

Crystal Bay is one of Nusa Penida’s few beautiful beaches that faces west so you can see the sun go down. It is one of the best places in Nusa Penida to watch the sun go down because the beaches closer to Toyapakeh aren’t as nice. 

At Crystal Bay, the sunset usually starts around 5:30 p.m., and where it is in the bay changes with the seasons. If you’re lucky, you might get a great picture of the sun going down over the bay with the slight rock arch in the middle of it. We suggest going there early to get a good spot for the sunset, especially during peak season.

Snorkeling at Crystal Bay Nusa Penida

Crystal Bay Beach is excellent for people who love the water, especially dives and snorkelers. The calm, clear water makes it easy to see, so it’s a great place to explore the fascinating underwater world. In the dry season, you can see coral reefs full of colorful marine life, from different fish, sea turtles, and the famous Mola Mola (Ocean Sunfish).

A lot of boat groups stop at Crystal Bay to snorkel. You’re lucky because you can swim 30 yards and land on a coral reef. There are many coral fish and maybe even turtles so you can enjoy some of the best action ever underwater.

Crystal Bay also has pretty good water most of the time. Besides being a famous dive site, it is also a great spot to relax, swim, fish, and soak up some sun. You can easily rent snorkeling gear from IDR 150,000 or $10 USD per person from the local warungs in Crystal Bay.

If you’re fit and have proper footwear, there’s a trail from Crystal Bay down to Pandan Beach. The path is manageable during the day when it’s not too hot. More experienced hikers can push further toward Broken Beach, though that route takes under two hours each way and requires a local guide for navigation and safety the terrain gets rough.

I spent maybe three hours at Crystal Bay total and it was still the best part of the day. If you’re day-tripping from Bali, go straight there after lunch and give yourself until sunset then head back. If you’re staying on Nusa Penida, don’t rush it. Get there by 4:30 PM, grab a spot on the beach, and let the evening do its thing.

Sort your fast boat back to Bali before you go boats from Sanur sell out during peak season and missing your crossing because you stayed for one more sunset is a rookie mistake I’d rather you not make.
