15 Things to do in Uluwatu Worth Your Time

I’ve lived in Uluwatu for over a year. I use Grab daily, I know which beaches fill up by 9 AM, and I’ve tried most of the activities on this list myself, including ones that surprised me, like the silver jewelry workshop and the Balinese cooking class I keep coming back to once a month. This guide covers what to do in Uluwatu based on real-time here.

Uluwatu sits at the southern tip of the Bukit Peninsula, 45 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport by Grab. The main areas are Bingin, Padang Padang, Pecatu, and the cliff temple corridor. Bingin used to be the quieter alternative to the main tourist strip, which changed after the 2025 demolitions cleared out most of the cliff warungs and businesses. It’s rebuilding, but it’s different now. Pecatu is the quieter base these days.

Best time to visit: April to October for the dry season and consistent swell. November to March brings afternoon rain, fewer crowds, and accommodation prices that are 30–50% lower. The temple, beaches, and wellness scene run year-round.

Getting Around Uluwatu

Grab is the easiest way to get around the Bukit. Airport to Bingin costs IDR 100,000–140,000 ($6–$8.50 USD), with a 35–50-minute trip depending on traffic. Short rides between beaches cost IDR 20,000–40,000 or $1.20–$2.40 USD.

For stays longer than three days, and if you have an international license, you can rent a scooter for IDR 60,000–100,000/day or $3.60–$6 USD from most hostels and local shops. It makes the whole area more accessible and saves on Grab fees fast.

One thing to know before heading to the beaches: there’s no mobile signal at the base of Bingin, Padang Padang, and Nyang Nyang. Download Google Maps offline before going down the cliff.

Uluwatu Activities You Shouldn’t Miss While In Bali

Uluwatu is not just about surfing, the wellness scene on this part of the island developed over the years. Here are the activities you can do around Uluwatu.

Visit Uluwatu Temple and Watch the Kecak Fire Dance

Uluwatu Temple sits on a cliff 70 meters above the Indian Ocean. I’ve been twice,  go before 4 PM if you want the temple without the Kecak crowd already forming. The sunset show starts around 6 PM, and the amphitheater fills fast.

The Kecak Fire Dance runs every evening at sunset, roughly 6:00 PM, shifting slightly by month. Around 70 performers, no instruments, just synchronized chanting and a fire centerpiece in an open-air amphitheater cut into the cliff. Get there 30 minutes early for a seat with a direct line of sight. Tickets for the dance cost IDR 150,000 ($9 USD) at the entrance.

⚠️ The monkeys here target sunglasses, cameras, and water bottles. They’re fast and not shy about it. Keep bags closed and don’t make direct eye contact if one approaches. Full guide dress code, sarong rental, best photography spots, and what to skip: Complete Guide to Uluwatu Temple.

Surf at Uluwatu Beaches

Uluwatu is one of the best surf destinations in Bali. The waves are fast and powerful, the reef is sharp, and the currents are real. It’s not a beginner beach, I learned that firsthand. I’ve surfed in Kuta, which is where I’d send anyone just starting out. Uluwatu is a step up from that.

If you’re past the beginner stage, this is worth the trip, specifically for the surf. If you’re still learning, Kuta or Baby Padang Padang are the better starting points before you graduate here.

Surf schools operate out of Bingin. A two-hour lesson with a local guide runs IDR 500,000–700,000 ($30–$42 USD) including board. Private sessions for intermediate surfers run IDR 700,000–1,000,000 ($42–$60 USD).

Explore Uluwatu’s Beaches

All of Uluwatu’s beaches require a descent down cliff stairs or carved rock paths. None have full facilities beyond a few warung. Always bring cash; parking and entry fees are cash only. For the complete list of every beach with entrance fees: Uluwatu Beaches Guide.

Bingin Beach

Uluwatu Bingin Beach

Most of the cliffside warungs were demolished in 2025. A few are coming back, but the top of the cliff is stripped back compared to what it was. The beach is still worth a visit, especially if you want to surf or just dip in the ocean tide pools. Take note that some parts of the beach have no mobile data at the bottom.

📍 Jl. Pantai Bingin, Pecatu   |   💲 Free entry + IDR 5,000 parking

Padang Padang Beach

You enter through a narrow crack in the limestone cliff one person at a time. The beach is sheltered and significantly calmer than most Uluwatu breaks, making it the best beach for swimming in the area. The left-hand break outside the bay is for experienced surfers only, and there’s a section of the beach for beginners, which they call Baby Padang. Arrive before 9 AM or after 3 PM to avoid the peak crowd.

📍 Jl. Labuan Sait, Pecatu   |   💲 IDR 15,000 ($1) entry + IDR 5,000 parking

Suluban Beach

Suluban Beach Uluwatu

Hidden behind limestone rocks at the base of a staircase and a low cave entrance. The walk-in is part of the experience. There are a couple of warungs built into the cliff with direct views of the break. Suluban is one of the more photogenic surf spots on the Bukit.

📍 Jl. Pantai Suluban, Pecatu   |   💲 Small parking fee

Thomas Beach

Thomas Beach Uluwatu

Quieter and less visited than Bingin or Padang Padang. A narrow beach with clear water and no surf school scene, which makes it good for an afternoon of just sitting. The access path is a steep 10-minute walk.

Get a Day Spa Pass at Istana

The Istana sits on the Uluwatu cliffs and offers day passes that include a cold bath, sauna, and pool access starting from IDR 150,000 ($10 USD). If you want to go further, they also have Cryotherapy and Sensory Deprivation Tanks, not something you find at most wellness spots in the area. Yoga classes run daily on the cliff-edge shala with direct Indian Ocean views.

It’s a good option if you want a full wellness day in one location rather than piecing together studios across the Bukit.

Visit Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

The GWK statue, Garuda Wisnu Kencana, stands 121 meters tall and is one of the largest statues in the world. The cultural park built around it has scheduled Kecak, Legong, and Barong dance performances throughout the day, with galleries and exhibition spaces sharing the mythological context behind what you’re seeing. It’s one of the few places in Bali where the performance schedule is consistent enough to plan around, which matters if you haven’t caught a dance show elsewhere on your trip.

Go in the early morning or late afternoon when the light hits the statue from the west also when the heat drops enough to walk the grounds comfortably.

Book a Helicopter Tour around Uluwatu

Powered by GetYourGuide

Helicopter tours depart from a few operators near the GWK area and offer views of Uluwatu’s cliff coastline, Jimbaran Bay, and the GWK statue from above. A 15-minute flight runs IDR 2,500,000–4,000,000 ($150–$240 USD) per person, depending on the route and operator. Longer scenic routes covering more of the southern Bukit are available at higher prices.

It’s a special-occasion spend most visitors do it once. The cliff geometry and color contrast between the limestone, green brush, and Indian Ocean don’t translate well from ground level. From 300 meters up, they do.

Take a Silver Jewelry Making Workshop

If you’re looking for a souvenir that actually means something, silversmithing might be the thing you didn’t know you needed. Balinese silver craft has roots going back centuries, and Celuk village near Ubud has always been its heart, but this workshop brings that same tradition down to Uluwatu, which honestly makes it so much easier if you missed doing this in Ubud.

You get to choose the weight of silver you want to use for your accessory, sit down, and pick up the wire and tools. The class runs about two to three hours, and you don’t need any experience going in.

Every step, the local instructors are patient and walk you through everything from shaping to finishing. Whether you’re here with a partner or just want a quieter afternoon doing something creative, this activity in Uluwatu is a must try. You’re not just buying a piece of Bali to take home, you’re the one who made it.

📍 Uluwatu Silver Class at Rolling Fork   |   📷Instagram

Volunteer and Learn How To Cook Indonesian Food

Once a month, I volunteer with the Happiness Foundation’s cooking program, and honestly, it’s one of the most favorite things I do here in Uluwatu. The cooking sessions are held bi-weekly at the Rolling Fork compound, where you’re not just cooking, you’re learning traditional Indonesian techniques using ingredients pulled fresh from nearby markets. There’s something quietly satisfying about chopping, stirring, and packing food that you know is going to end up on someone’s table in a local family they support.

If you’re spending enough time in Bali to want something that feels more meaningful than another activity off a tourist list, this is worth looking into. You leave with a better understanding of Indonesian cooking, but more than that, you leave feeling like your time here actually contributed something real.

Join a Yoga or Pilates Class in Uluwatu

If you’re staying long enough to build any kind of routine, Uluwatu’s wellness scene makes it genuinely easy to do that. Within a 10-minute scooter ride from Bingin or Padang Padang, you’ve got ocean-view yoga shalas, dedicated reformer Pilates studios, and gyms with full recovery facilities and all without the chaos of commuting to Canggu. Drop-in yoga starts around IDR 150,000 (about $9 USD), and reformer Pilates runs IDR 200,000–300,000 ($12–$18 USD), which is easy enough on the wallet to make it a weekly habit rather than a one-off treat.

The one thing I’d pass on early is to book ahead, morning slots at the better studios go fast, and during peak months like July–August and December–January, 24 hours notice is really the minimum.

For pilates, grip socks are mandatory at reformer studios if that’s your thing, but most places have them on-site so it’s never been a reason to skip a session.

Watch the Sunset In Uluwatu Cliffs

Uluwatu Things to copy house

Most people watch the sunset from Single Fin or the temple viewing area and call it done. Both are good, but if you want something quieter with a real view, there are a few local spots worth knowing about.

Karang Boma Cliff sits about 2 kilometers east of Uluwatu Temple and looks out over the Indian Ocean from a completely different angle than the bar crowds. The walk from the temple takes 20 to 30 minutes through scrubland and scattered Hindu shrines. No entrance fee, no vendors, just the cliff and the horizon. I’d come here when you’ve already done the Kecak show and want something that feels less busy.

Right near the cliff, CopyHouseBali is a local cafe that most visitors walk straight past. Order a coffee or fresh juice, pull up a chair facing the ocean, and you’ll likely stay longer than you planned. Places like this are worth supporting because the money stays in the community and the experience is genuinely better for it.

Panorama View Point near Uluwatu Temple is another one the crowds tend to miss. It sits just far enough from the main entrance that most people don’t bother walking to it. Locals come here in the late afternoon and the atmosphere is relaxed in a way the bigger bars around Uluwatu have mostly lost.

Eat and Drink at Cliff-Top Bars and Restaurants

The cliff-top bar scene in Uluwatu has something for every kind of evening. On one end, you’ve got plastic chairs at a warung where the view costs you nothing and the Bintang is cold. On the other hand, full DJ sets, cocktail menus, and crowds dressed like they’re going out for the night. Both work depending on what you’re in the mood for.

  1. Single Fin is the one most visitors end up at, and honestly, it earns the reputation. Three floors were built directly above the break, and the Sunday sessions have always been the busiest. I always tell people to get there before 5:00 PM if they want a front-row seat to watch the sunset. Their DJ starts playing at 4 PM, and the place fills up faster than you’d expect.
  2. Ulu Cliff House is where I’d send you if you want a proper meal with your sunset. This space spans multiple terrace levels cut into the cliff, and the Indonesian and international menus are good enough that skipping food here would be a mistake. Food and drinks prices here start IDR 150,000–300,000 ($9–$18 USD), and DJ sessions run on weekend evenings, so you can stay for the party after dinner.
  3. Elkabron draws a good mix of crowds for sunset DJ sets, and you can enjoy the pool or seats right on the cliff edge overlooking Dreamland Beach, which are the ones everyone wants. I learned the hard way that getting there early is the only strategy that works here.
  4. Rock Bar at Ayana Resort feels like a completely different night out compared to the others. If you want more quiet time alone or for a date night and enjoy the view with, no DJ, no noise, just the ocean and some of the best cocktails in Uluwatut at IDR 150,000–250,000 ($9–$15 USD). I’d book this one ahead of time if you’re planning a quiet night out or a relaxed evening with family, because sunset slots go fast and showing up without a reservation is a gamble.

🌅 BGB Sunset tip: Uluwatu faces due west, so every one of these bars is after the same golden hour. In peak season between June and September, the best cliff seats are gone an hour before sunset. I always get there early or accept that I’ll be watching from the back, and some places require a deposit for big-group reservations.

Experience the Ulwatu Nightlife

Unlike Canggue there’s various options for music genres, Uluwatu’s nightlife runs along the cliff edge and the options cover a lot of ground. One end is budget-friendly Mexican food and cheap margaritas, the other is an infinity pool with international DJs and a door price to match. Here’s what’s worth knowing before you pick your night.

  • Savaya is the largest and most produced venue on the Bukit. A tiered infinity pool, cliff-side stage, and international DJs run every weekend, with monthly headline events that consistently sell out across the region. The production quality sits closer to a club in Ibiza than a typical beach bar, and the crowd reflects that. Entry with pool access runs IDR 500,000–1,000,000 (~$30–$60 USD) and reservations for Saturdays and Sundays are essential.
  • Ulu Cliff House operates as a full restaurant through the evening before transitioning into a cocktail bar after dinner service ends. The venue occasionally brings in international DJs on weekend nights, which shifts the atmosphere considerably from its earlier dinner crowd. No cover charge, no dress code, and the cliff terrace stays open late enough to make it a proper night out. It works as an opening move or a place to finish the night depending on what comes in between.
  • Single Fin is where most Sunday nights in Uluwatu start and often where they stay. Sessions run until late with no cover charge and the crowd builds steadily from late afternoon into the evening across three floors built directly above the break. The upper floor fills up fast and the energy on a busy Sunday night is hard to find anywhere else on the Bukit. Arriving before 6 PM is the only reliable way to secure a decent spot.
  • Tabu runs a tighter DJ venue with a mix of local and international crowds and door prices that sit well below Savaya. The space is smaller and more focused than the bigger cliff venues, which makes the energy feel more concentrated on a busy night. It draws a younger crowd and the night tends to pick up noticeably after 10 PM. Worth checking their Instagram for event nights before heading over.
  • Il Sallotto is one of the famous Italian restaurant in Uluwatu and until around 10 PM before shifting format into a DJ bar with a more intimate setup than the venues above. A door charge of IDR 150,000 (~$9 USD) applies on select nights and the food before the music starts is genuinely worth arriving early for. It has built a reputation as the place where after-parties around the Bukit tend to land, which means the crowd gets interesting late. The kitchen closes at 10 PM so timing matters if dinner is part of the plan.
  • Lola’s Cantina is the most affordable option on this list by a considerable margin. Mexican food, margaritas, and reggaeton every Friday with no cover and no production budget behind it. The crowd is relaxed, the drinks are cheap, and the atmosphere on a Friday night has an energy that the bigger venues rarely match. It fills up fast after 9 PM and the crowd tends to stay well into the early hours.

📱 BGB TIP: Schedules across all these venues change week to week. Checking their Instagram before heading out saves a wasted trip.

Have a Seafood Dinner at Jimbaran Bay

Jimbaran Bay is 15 kilometers from Bingin area; getting there is an easy 25-minute ride by Grab bike for IDR 40,000–60,000 ($2.40–$3.60 USD). The beachfront seafood grills run along the southern end of the bay. You choose fish, prawns, squid, and lobster by weight, they grill it over coconut husks, and you eat at a table in the sand at sunset.

A full dinner for two, including fish, prawns, calamari, rice, vegetables, and drinks, costs IDR 400,000–600,000 ($24–$36 USD). Menega Cafe and Jimbaran Beach Cafe are the two most famous restaurants. If you want to get a table and catch the nice ocean views during sunsent make sure to arrive 90 minutes before sunset..

Shop the Local Markets and Bazaars

Uluwatu runs a solid rotation of markets through the week covering local produce, handmade goods, vintage clothing, and street food. Most are free to enter and the quality has improved a lot over the last few years as more local vendors set up permanent stalls.

  • Ulu Love Market is the most consistent option on the Bukit. It runs daily in front of Shaka Riki and is the one I’d send you to first if you only have time for one.
  • Wanana Market and Hatch Market both run on weekends and draw a younger, more curated crowd. Both are worth checking out if you’re around on a Saturday or Sunday.
  • Seed Market runs every Saturday and focuses on arts, crafts, and independent local makers. It’s the one to go to if you’re looking for something to bring home.
  • Rolling Fork sets up every Friday and leans more toward street food than shopping. It draws a good early evening crowd and works well as a warm-up before heading to one of the cliff bars nearby.

📍 BGB TIP: Schedules shift seasonally and vendors come and go. I always check their Instagram before heading out to confirm they’re running that week.

Learn and Play Padel in Uluwatu

Padel has taken off on the Bukit faster than almost any other sport in the last two years. There are now a handful of courts in Uluwatu and the surrounding area, and the barrier to entry is low; if you can hold a tennis racket, you can play a game of padel the same day.

Courts book up fast in the early mornings and after 5 PM. Midday slots are easier to get and significantly cheaper. Racket rental is included at most venues. Show up, book a court, and you’re playing within the hour.

FAQs: Things to do in Uluwatu Bali

Is Uluwatu good for beginner surfers?

For the main breaks, no. Uluwatu reef and Bingin are for intermediate and above, sharp reef, fast waves, real currents. Padang Padang has a calmer inside section for beginners, but most surf instructors recommend starting at Kuta or Seminyak before coming here. Everything else in Uluwatu temple, beaches, wellness, and nightlife works for any traveler.

How many days do you need in Uluwatu?

Three days cover the temple, the main beaches, a sunset at Single Fin, and a yoga or Pilates session. Five days give you time to add Nusa Penida, a surf lesson, and one of the cultural activities. Most people who intend to stay three days end up extending. The Bukit has a way of doing that.

How do I get from Bali’s airport to Uluwatu?

Grab from Ngurah Rai International (DPS) to Bingin takes 35–50 minutes and costs IDR 100,000–140,000 ($6–$8.50 USD). Book through the Grab app before you land. Significantly cheaper than the fixed-price taxi queue outside arrivals and just as reliable.

What’s the best time to visit Uluwatu?

April to October for dry weather and the best surf. June to August is the peak season, the busiest, and the most expensive. November to March has afternoon rain showers, but 30–50% lower accommodation prices and far fewer tourists.

Is Uluwatu safe for solo travelers?

Yes. The Bingin area has a large community of solo travelers and long-termers. Main safety notes: road conditions on the scooter (steep and poorly lit in places), the monkeys at Uluwatu Temple, and strong currents at the surf breaks. Use Grab at night rather than walking the unlit cliff roads.

Is Uluwatu worth visiting?

Book accommodation at least 2 weeks ahead for June–August. Surf lessons, the silver jewelry workshop, cooking classes, and Nusa Penida day trips all benefit from advance booking of 24–48 hours. The temple, beaches, and nightlife need nothing more than a Grab ride.

Uluwatu rewards longer stays. The first three days are the highlight reel. After that, it turns into the kind of place you structure your next trip around. I moved here intending to stay three months. That was over a year ago.
